Juan Martin Del Potro will now head into a second-round clash with top seed Novak Djokovic, on Tuesday night at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel after he narrowly held off Frances Tiafoe to claim his opening match in Acapulco, an event that is his second for the year.
The match which went on for about two hours and 33 minutes saw del Potro hold off the free-swinging Tiafoe 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(1). Tiafoe, 19 years old who grew up idolizing del Potro almost came close to toppling the former World No. 4 in the Emirates ATP Rankings during the match.
Del Potro, who was the semifinalist at the Delray Beach Openlast week started stronger as he broke for 5-4 in the opening set of the game. On a return error from the American qualifier’s racquet, the Argentine came up with three set points. Read more »
Rafael Nadal is pretty cool in admitting that he is not the most dominant tennis player in the world anymore.
The Spaniard suffered a defeat against Andy Murray on his home turf last week which saw him falling below number 5 in world rankings. For the last decade Nadal had been able to maintain his position in the top 5 despite his injury issues and all, but, because of some very average performances off late, he is now the 6th ranked player in the world and his career seems to be going only one direction; down south. There was some heat out there on the court when Andy Murray and Tomas Berdych took on each other at the start of this year and the reason for that was a woman, Dani Vallverdu.
Vallverdu had been in the support staff of Murray until the last season and then, she decided to switch to Berdych.
That probably provided Murray a little bit of extra fire in his belly when he came up against Berdych at the Melbourne Park.
The 26-year old wanted to prove a point to Vallverdu and he did that successfully as he completely blew away Berdych.
The duo is going to meet again in Miami in a couple of days’ time and it should not be surprising if the atmosphere remains heated there as well.
Murray and Berdych actually share quite a good relationship between themselves. Both have been mates since their teenage. So, no personal rift seems to exist there, but, still, there would be fierce competitiveness and both the players would be going flat out to make a mark.
Murray though said yesterday that he had no hard feelings in his heart for Vallverdu and he would even be inviting her in his wedding ceremony that is going to be held shortly. Read more »
